The God of Enough

If there’s one thing that is consistent about my personality, it is my desire to know the future. I want the answers so that I can make plans in order to get where God is taking me. There have been moments I’ve found myself praying, “God, just show me which way to go and I’m all in! But I can’t be all in until I know for certain that you’ve called me to this specific path.”

Over time, what I’ve realized is that God doesn’t only care about where we end up, He cares about the journey we take getting there and the process of what happens within us along the way.

God uses the journey to prepare us for the calling. Not only that, the journey is the calling. I think this is where we miss it a lot of the time – we think we are journeying in order to get to what God has ultimately called us to.

The truth is, there is no “final destination” here on earth, the final destination is heaven.

As we journey through life, we are daily living out our calling. In this, God provides us with daily bread. That is why Jesus asked for it in the prayer He used as a model for us to follow, “Give us this day our daily bread”. (Matthew 6:11, emphasis added)

The whole point of coming to God for sustenance is that it’s daily.

Way too often, when I am talking with God, I ask Him for enough to supply my needs for tomorrow, and the next day, and a month from now, and a year from now. He is the God of today as much as He is the God of tomorrow, and He wants me focused on obeying Him and being faithful right here, right now, in this very moment.

If He gave me what I needed for another month, and we’re being honest, I’d probably wait another month before seriously going to Him again.

But only giving me what I need for this day keeps me coming back for more.

He promises, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

His grace is sufficient. His mercy is new every single morning and it never runs out. It provides the exact amount and type of spiritual bread I need for that day. His love never ceases. His faithfulness is great – beyond all comprehension.

He is the God of enough. The God of “just enough”. Giving me just what I need every day to sustain me and get me through so that I’m not struggling, but I come seeking Him again for it day after day. And He is the God of more than enough, because while He may not reveal His entire life plan to me all at once, He is more than capable of making sure not a day goes to waste and I am fully taken care of.

We don’t arrive at our calling.

We seek Him every day for our daily bread, to be emptied of ourselves and filled up with His truths in every way we need to be filled up, in order to do what He leads us to do for that day. That is our calling.
